Sandhya Rao has worked in the media for many years, as print journalist, books editor and children’s books writer, and coordinated an exhibition called ‘Stree’ as part of the Festival of India in Moscow with artists Chandralekha and Dashrath Patel. She has published about 25 books for children (in English, Hindi, and in translation) and rendered Astrid Lindgren’s Pippi Longstocking in Hindi. Some of her well-known books are Ekki Dokki, Storm in the Garden, Grandma’s Eyes, My Friend the Sea, Picture Gandhi, My Gandhi Scrapbook, Stories on the Sand, Read and Colour Freedom Stories, Okaasama Otousama, Dream Writer, Think Eat Save and Seed Soil Sun. In 2006, she was one of only two children’s authors from India to be invited to the Frankfurt Bookfair. My Friend, the Sea received a prize at the Berlin Literary Festival 2005. My Mother’s Sari was selected as an outstanding international title by USBBY in 2007. She has shared books with children in towns and cities across India, and in Germany, the UK and Sweden, and participated in several bookfairs.
