I have always been intrigued by Amrita Sher-Gill's artworks; however, before reading this book I never really knew anything about her life and journey as an artist. What I specifically loved about 'Rebel with a Paintbrush' (apart from its' great title) is it's unique writing style and presentation– the visuals perfectly complement the text, and the snippets of information provided alongside the actual story of Amrita are very interesting.
I wouldn't only recommend this book to people who consider themselves 'art-lovers', as there is so much more to it than just art...there are references to historical events such as the WW2; emerging themes of family, culture and women in India; and lastly, this book gives an insight into life in Hungarian cities, Paris and parts of India at the time.
Anita Vanchharajani's book is truly nothing short of gripping and compelling. I, for one finished it in one sitting as I simply couldn't put it down.
